Delta Kappa Gamma Purposes
The purposes of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International shall be
to unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellowship,
to honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education,
to advance the professional interest and position of women in education,
to initiate, endorse, and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators,
to endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pursuing graduate study and to grant fellowships to non-member women educators,
to stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourage their participation in appropriate programs of action,
to inform the members of current economic, social, political, and education issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society.

Gamma Eta Chapter:
Our History and Celebrations
Gamma Eta chapter is one of four chapters in the Baton Rouge area. It was founded in 1993. Evelyn Alford served as our first president, and two founding sisters, Debbie Marchand and Carol Peltier, are still extremely active today. We have twenty-four members who live in three neighboring parishes (East Baton Rouge, Livingston, and Iberville).
Our members have helped effect change in the state department, local school boards, local schools, and the state teacher retirement system. Our retired sisters are still engaged with their community and DKG, and lend their ears, resources, and knowledge to those of us still in the classroom. Phyllis Heroy was instrumental in Baton Rouge's "One Book One Community" program before her passing, and her legacy has translated to our chapter in the form of a literature study at a yearly meeting.
For the 2017-2019 biennium, F. Margret Atkinson is the Southeast Representative for the Communications and Publications Committee. Several chapter meetings aim to better engage with our community, including presentations by representatives from Braveheart, Cancer Services of the Great Baton Rouge Area, and the battered women's shelter. We also have a "new teacher project" every year, where we adopt a new teacher and supply her with materials needed for her new classroom.
